What is a POS health insurance plan?

POS stand for Point of Service plan.A POS health insurance plan is a cross between a PPO plan and a HMO plan.A POS plan tends to have a smaller network than a PPO plan. When choosing a POS plan you will have to pick a primary care physician (like a HMO) but you will be given some credit for going to an out of network doctor or hospital (like a PPO).If you use an in network doctor or hospital generally there is either no deductible or a very small one.If you use an out of network doctor or hospital there is usually a very large deductible to be met.It would also to be smart to check with your insurance company to see if you must have a referral to see a doctor other than your primary care physician (PCP).Some insurance companies do require a referral in order to receive full benefits.Like any insurance plan, always check your Benefit Plan Design before seeking treatment.
